3 Ways to Finish Zipper Ends. Tips and Tricks for Beginners to Easily Finish Both Ends of Cut-to-Size Nylon Coil Zippers.
While there are many types of zippers in the world depending on their material or purpose, unless it is a garment made of a very special material (such as a wedding dress or very thick fabric), the zipper I mainly use is the nylon zipper. It is smooth, so you simply cut it to the desired length and attach the zipper head; the needle also goes through it easily.
The only downside is the hassle of having to manually finish the cut ends of the zipper. So, I thought I would summarize a few commonly used zipper end finishing methods.
1️⃣ How to Finish Zipper Ends with Fabric Scraps
2️⃣ How to Finish Zipper Ends with Cotton Tape
3️⃣ How to Finish Zipper Ends Without Other Materials
1️⃣ How to finish zipper ends with a piece of fabric
Prepare a piece of fabric that is wider than twice the width of the zipper. The length of the fabric should be the width that wraps around the zipper end plus 2 cm.
Fold the top seam allowance of the fabric by 1cm and fold it in half while wrapping around the zipper.
Sew to match the zipper width and trim the seam allowance.
Send the seam allowance to the back of the zipper.
Press the seam open, align the bottom edge of the fabric with the zipper end, and sew. The seam allowance is approximately 1 cm.
Turn the fabric inside out.
Once the zipper end is neatly hidden behind the turned-out fabric, sew the fabric in place to finish.
2️⃣ How to finish the zipper end with cotton tape
It is similar to the method of finishing a zipper with fabric. The width of the zipper end is determined by the width of the cotton tape, and it seems a bit simpler than the method using fabric. Prepare a length that is longer than twice the width of the zipper and wrap it around the zipper.
Trim the seam allowance by sewing to match the zipper width.
Send the seam allowance to the back of the zipper and press the seam open.
Flip the ring-shaped cotton tape over and align it with the end of the zipper.
Sew the cotton tape around the end of the zipper to secure it, and the zipper end finishing is complete.
3️⃣ How to finish zipper ends without other materials
There may be cases where materials other than the zipper are not available, or where high-quality stitching is not necessary. In such situations, you can easily finish the zipper end without any materials.
Trim about 1.5 to 2 cm from both sides of the serrations at the end of the zipper. The width can be adjusted according to the zipper width.
Just cut off the zipper teeth.
Fold the zipper fabric on both sides of the cut zipper teeth (I'm not sure exactly what to call it) and wrap it around the end of the zipper.
If you fold and secure it as neatly as possible, the end of the zipper is easily tidied up so that the zipper head does not come off.
