Standing Pencil Case - Photo instructions for a useful little pencil case that can be folded over to become a pencil holder – very practical.
Materials:
- Outer fabric: approx. 30x22cm + 10x10cm
- Lining fabric: approx. 30x22cm + 10x10cm
(coated cotton is also suitable)
- Iron-on interfacing: approx. 30x22cm + 2x 10x10cm
- Continuous zipper with slider, approx. 65cm
Cutting instructions:
- Cut out one piece each of the bag pattern from the outer fabric, lining fabric, and interfacing.
- Cut out one base piece each from the outer fabric, lining fabric, and interfacing.
The pattern already includes a seam allowance of approx. 0.7cm.

This is what your material should look like now. Iron the interfacing firmly onto all pieces except the lining of the bag.
First, pin the zipper to the curve of the outer fabric. You can do this with pins or, for example, Stylefix. The zipper teeth should point inwards, towards the fabric. The zipper should extend a few centimeters beyond the fabric; this will make it easier to thread the zipper pull later. In this example, it's a bit short.
If you don't have much experience with sewing on zippers, I recommend sewing the zipper on now, but keeping a little more distance from the teeth so that this seam disappears into the next one.
Next, place the lining fabric right sides together with the outer fabric and pin or glue it to the zipper. When sewing, you should position the needle slightly more to the left so that the first seam is not visible.
With more practice, you can of course sew the zipper in one step between the layers of fabric.
Then you cut the overhanging fabric into the curves so that it lies nice and flat later.
Now iron it nicely… and topstitch along the zipper.
It's a good idea to close the open bottom edge with a seam. This will save you a lot of trouble later. Now you can attach the zipper pull. As I mentioned, the zipper for my sewing example was a bit short; this one was the right length (65 cm).
You can find instructions for threading online, so here's just a brief overview: I bevel one side, briefly melt the zipper if it starts to unravel (this can happen with several attempts), and insert the zipper pull along the long side. Then I lay the fabric side by side at the same height and slide the short part of the zipper into the zipper pull.
If you are satisfied with the result, secure the end with a seam so that the zipper cannot slip down again.
Cut off the bottom edge neatly.
Now it's time for the base. For this, you pin or glue the base pieces, which are covered with fusible interfacing, together wrong sides facing. I glued them here; this works better with two layers of firm interfacing.
Next, finish the edge. You can do this with an overlock machine or a zigzag stitch (3/3 is a good setting). You should finish the seam ends.
Now comes the hardest part: The bottom needs to be attached. To do this, mark the quarters on the bottom (they are also marked on the pattern) and on the top. The zipper is one of the markings.
I like to secure the base with clips; with so many layers of fabric and especially the batting, pins quickly reach their limits. In my experience, the base is slightly larger; if necessary, you can leave it overhanging a bit.
Try sewing on the inside or the outside to see if it works better for you. But you absolutely must check that you have sewn all the layers of fabric together.
Now you can turn the bag inside out and, for example, attach a small charm to the zipper.
