DIY Fabric Moose Toy Sewing Tutorial

Materials

- 50 x 30 cm Fabric 1
- 35 x 10 cm Fabric 2
- Fiberfill
- Optional: Buttons or beads for eyes, optional: Felt/ribbon for scarf

Preparation
Cut out pieces A and B; these already include seam allowances. When cutting later, don't forget the markings (turning openings, antler markings). Use a short stitch length (max. 2) to prevent the seams from unraveling when stuffing.

Mirrored?

Some pieces need to be cut as mirror images.

Option 1: Fold your fabric right sides together and place the pattern on one of the wrong sides. Then mark the fabric and cut both pieces.

Option 2: Mark the pattern on the wrong side of the fabric and cut the fabric normally. Then you turn the pattern over so that the writing is facing down, mark the second piece and cut it out normally as well.

2. Sewing the antlers

 a. Place one piece each of fabric 1 and fabric 2 (part B) right sides together and sew with a straight stitch at the marked points. Leave the turning opening at the bottom unsewn. Carefully clip the curves so the seam won't unravel. Then turn the antlers right side out; you can use the rounded end of a paintbrush for this.

b. Fill the antlers with stuffing, but leave approximately 0.8cm unfilled near the turning opening.

c. Now press seam to seam and topstitch close to the edge; this will make sewing it in later easier. d. Repeat steps a–c with the other two B pieces from fabric 1 and fabric 2.

3. Sewing the Moose

a. Place the two fabric pieces A right sides together. Place the antler halves between them so that fabric 2 is facing forward and the longer antler halves are aligned. The antler halves should point inwards and be positioned at the corresponding mark on the head!

b. First, sew the antlers in place by stitching them close to the edge with a straight stitch to the head.

c. Then start at the bottom of the turning opening mark and stitch all the way around with a 0.7 cm seam allowance up to the top turning opening mark.

d. Carefully clip the curves so that the seam cannot unravel.

e. Turn the moose right side out; you can use the brush again to help.

f. You may need to iron the seams now, depending on the fabric you used.

g. Stuff the moose body with fiberfill, using less near the turning opening.

4. Scarf

a. Iron the short side over by about 0.5 cm, then fold the fabric lengthwise exactly in the middle.

b. After you have ironed, unfold the two long sides and fold them to the resulting center line.

c. Now iron again and then topstitch close to the edge all the way around.

Or you can, of course, use a felt scarf; simply cut it to the desired length. A length of about 25 cm is sufficient for a knot in the scarf. Or you could use a pretty woven ribbon. Or you could...

5. Final Steps

a. If you like, you can sew buttons or beads onto your moose for eyes. To avoid seeing the ends, it's best to do this before closing the turning opening.

b. Close the turning opening with a mattress stitch or topstitch close to the edge. This won't be a problem at this point, as the scarf will be attached there.
