You'll need (for a 50x50cm cushion):
The dimensions below include seam allowance. For a cushion cover, cut everything to the size of the cushion (so no extra seam allowance). This ensures a perfect fit and prevents sagging.
1 x front panel (a) 50Hx50B
2 x back panels (b) 50Hx35B
1 x lining pocket section (c) 27Hx50B
1 x left pocket section (d) 27Hx26B
1 x right pocket section bottom (e) 19Hx26B
1 x right pocket section top (f) 9Hx26B
2 x zipper flaps (g) 3Hx8B
1 x 25cm zipper
1 x 25cm bag webbing/twill tape
1 x 210cm piping tape
possibly flock foil
Overlock or zigzag stitch all edges first to prevent the fabric from fraying when washing the cushion cover.
Instructions:
1. Press one long side of both back panels 2 cm inward and topstitch at 1.8 cm. Do this on the right side of the left back panel and on the left side of the right back panel.
2. Press the short sides of the zipper flaps 1 cm inward, then press the flap in half again.
3. Cut off the end of the zipper.
4. Tuck it in 1cm between a zipper flap.
5. Sew at 2mm.
(If you haven't done this before, it's best to attach the flap to the zipper in two steps.)
6. Cut the other end of the zipper down to 21cm. Be careful not to cut off the zipper pull!
7. Now attach the second zipper flap to the cut end in the same way as in steps 4 and 5. Your zipper is now the same width as your right pocket section, namely 26 cm.
8. Pin the zipper to the top edge of the bottom part of the right pocket, right sides together.
9. Sew in place with a zipper foot.
10. Fold (and press) open.
11. Pin the zipper to the bottom edge of the top section of the right pocket, right sides together, and repeat steps 9 and 10.
12. Now pin the left side of the right pocket piece to the right side of the left pocket piece, right sides together. Sew at a 1 cm interval and press the seam towards the left pocket piece.
Pin the pocket lining onto this piece (right sides together) and topstitch the top edge at 1cm.
13. Turn the piece over, press thoroughly, and topstitch the top edge at 2mm.
14. If you want to flock something on the pillow, it is best to do that now.
15. Pin the bag band or twill tape to the right side of the front piece, 15 cm from both corners. Stitch with a temporary stitch at 0.5 cm.
16. Now pin the finished pocket piece to the front piece, aligning the sides and bottom edges neatly.
17. Where the left and right pocket sections meet, draw a line from top to bottom. This creates two pockets on the pillow. Stitch a triangle at the top for extra reinforcement.
18. Now attach the piping to the right side of the front piece. Make sure the piping stitching is 1 cm from the edge. Stitch exactly on the existing stitching (at 1 cm).
Now pin the two back pieces to the front piece, overlapping, right sides together. Stitch exactly on the seam used to attach the piping to the front piece. Turn everything over.
