Coin Purse Key Chain Tutorial

This is a quick and easy-to-sew, totally versatile key pouch. You can make it from faux leather or reinforced fabric and embellish it with ribbon, for example.

There are no limits to your imagination.

You can also sew a strap on the side to attach a carabiner.

The free pattern includes detailed, illustrated sewing instructions and the corresponding pattern.

The finished key pouch measures approximately 11 x 8 cm.

Please read the instructions completely before you begin sewing. This is especially recommended for beginners. When printing the pattern, please ensure your printer is correctly configured and select "no page scaling."

Materials List:

• 1 x 50 x 18 cm outer fabric (e.g., faux leather or cotton)
• 1 x 50 x 18 cm lining fabric (laminated cotton)
• 1 x 50 x 18 cm fusible interfacing H 250 for reinforcement (for cotton)
• Optional: webbing
• 16 cm zipper (I used an 18 cm zipper or continuous zipper)
• 1 key ring, 3 cm diameter
• Optional: 1 key ring, 2.5 cm diameter
• Optional: 1 carabiner, 4 cm high
Sewing machine, fabric marker, rotary cutter or scissors, pinking shears, pins, double-sided adhesive tape (Stylefix), glue stick, and matching thread.  

The 1.0 cm seam allowance is already included in the pattern. 

A tip from me: 

If you plan to sew several key pouches, print out the pattern, cut it out roughly, glue it onto a piece of cardboard, and then cut it out precisely along the outlines. This will make it easier to trace the pattern onto the fabric later. 

Cut out the parts as follows:

- Outer part - 2 times
- Inner part - 2 times
- Inner band - 1 time
- Outer band - 1 time
Iron the H 250 reinforcement onto the outer parts, but not onto the outer band, which remains without reinforcement.

Using a fabric marker, draw a horizontal line 3 cm from the top edge.
Fix the cut webbing with Stylefix above this line.
Sew the webbing onto an outer piece.

Using a fabric marker, mark 2 cm from the outside edge to the inside at the top. Now place the zipper along the top edge with the teeth facing down.

The end piece is located directly at the upper left marking. Attach the zipper to the top edge using Stylefix.

Now attach an inner piece to this using Stylefix (the fabrics should be right sides together), mark 2 cm from the left and right outer edges, and sew from mark to mark. Don't forget to secure the seam by backstitching.

Now fold both pieces to one side. The fabrics are now inside out, left side down. Repeat the same process with the other side.

This is what it looks like now. Next, the inner parts will be sewn onto the zipper.

To do this, fold one side of the lining fabric to the left, leaving all the other layers on the right. Mark 2 cm from the outside at each point and then sew the fabric to the zipper close to the edge, from mark to mark.

Repeat the same process on the other side. It will then look like this. No seam is visible on the outer fabric.

Now take the tape for the inside and, optionally, for the outside. Mark a line in the middle, parallel to the long side. Apply a small amount of glue with the Pritt stick and iron both sides inwards. Fold this in half again and sew the strip close to the edge along the long sides.

Fold the band in the middle and sew it close to the edge in the seam allowance to the left side of the bottom (i.e., the underside) of an outer piece.

Optionally, sew the outer tape to the right side of the outer fabric in the seam allowance as described above, at a height of approximately 4.0 cm from the zipper.

Place the outer pieces right sides together and the inner pieces right sides together. Leave a turning opening of approximately 5 cm at the bottom of the inner pieces.  

The ribbon on the right side of the outer piece should be roughly opposite this turning opening. It will be threaded through later.  

Slide the zipper into the pouch and sew the inner and outer pieces together. Trim the seam allowances with pinking shears and cut off the zipper.

Turn your key pouch right side out and pull the ribbon through the opening, up almost to the seam where it was sewn on the outside. Sew the ribbon securely close to the edge, simultaneously closing the opening. Just attach the key ring.
