Fabric recommendation
Solid, inelastic fabric such as oilskin, canvas, velvet, leather
You need that
· 0.5 m solid fabric (we use Oilskin for the sewing example)
· An endless zipper with at least 40 cm or more is recommended
· divisible zipper and a pliers tool (to shorten it and to remove teeth)
· Sewing pattern
· Fabric scissors/pen/ruler
· Fabric clips
· Webbing at least 1.80 cm
· color matching yarn
· If necessary, insert/artificial leather scraps to reinforce the bottom
· Zipper foot
Cut out the printed pattern and glue the leaves together in order: red line to red line. To help you, we have created a pattern image that shows you what your pattern piece will look like later. Cut out the section along the black line. The seam allowance of 1 cm is already included.
Now place the pattern piece on your desired fabrics and secure them with pins.
Now cut the outer fabric and the lining. Then transfer the pinch to your fabric. If you are using heavily frayed fabrics, finish the seam allowances with an overlock or zigzag stitch.
If you want to reinforce the bottom, you can use robust fabric scraps such as:
Faux leather that you can sew into the seam allowance on the inside or sew on the outside.
If you don't want to visually set off the bottom, you can also sew a solid insert (such as a saddle pad insert) on the inside.
To do this, I traced and cut a rectangle the size of the bottom with a 1 cm seam allowance on the long edges. This is the gray area in the cut (you can see the cut part also cut it up for this).
Now pin this to the bottom of your pattern piece, fold over the 1 cm seam allowance and stitch it up, also stitch the short edges with a narrow edge so that nothing can slip afterwards.
You can transfer the markings for the position of the webbing onto your pattern piece. The practical thing about the Oilskin fabric is that you can carefully place the markings with your fingernail or with a sharp object.
To make it easier, you can place the pattern piece in the break and the markings will press through to the underside. (If you use a different fabric, mark the positions with tailor's chalk, for example.)
Now pin the webbing onto your pattern piece using the markings, starting at the bottom so that the beginning and end of the webbing can be easily sewn later. Make sure that the loops are not twisted. Then stitch the webbing tight with a narrow edge. But be careful, pay attention to the next step!
At the top edge you have to leave 3 cm free to the stitching, as the zipper still needs to be sewn in.
Fold the end of the ribbon over once and secure it securely with a few extra stitches.
Now you can close the seams of the respective bag parts: To do this, first place your outer pocket right sides together. Then sew the pocket opening on the right and left together approx. 3 cm and close the side seams at 1 cm to the bottom of the bag.
Spread the seam allowance apart. If you don't use Oilskin: iron the seam allowances apart.
Now we sew off the bottom (gray area in the section). To do this, place the side seam of the bag in the middle of the bottom at the gusset. Pin securely and topstitch at 1 cm.
Now repeat sewing together the side seam and sewing down the bottom of your lining. Leave a turning opening in the side seam.
Now let's move on to the zipper. Make a mark at the end of the zipper based on the length of the pocket opening.
Secure the area with a few hand stitches.
For a separable zipper: Use pliers to carefully remove the excess teeth.
Now pin the zipper to the pocket opening with fabric clips.
Now sew the zipper onto the outer fabric, preferably with a zipper foot.
Now we move on to the lining
Pin the seam allowance of the lining to the zipper tape with the right side of the fabric and sew it in place.
Of course, you can also leave out a seam and stitch the outer fabric and lining directly together.
Now turn the bag over to the correct side through the opening in the lining.
Close the turning opening with a ladder stitch or the sewing machine.
Push both fabrics away from the zipper teeth and secure everything securely with fabric clips.
Now stitch both fabrics onto the zipper with narrow edges.
Almost there... now let's secure the top corners of the bag and both sides of the zipper: Take one corner at a time and carefully push the corner out with a sharp object.
Place a piece of faux leather in the break under a corner and trace it, then you can push it onto the corner and fix it well and stitch it.
If you want to sew in a loop, e.g. for another webbing, cut the sides of the triangle back beforehand, slide the loop between them and then stitch it in place. You can carefully cut back the excess artificial leather.
