Sizing
The men's slipper pattern is for UK size 9 and the women's slipper pattern is for UK size 6.
To make a different size, measure the length of the feet and across the highest point over the arch of the foot. Adjust the length of the pattern's sole and insole by adding or reducing the length at the back. See the line on the pattern showing where to increase. Adjust the width of the upper by adding or reducing evenly at both sides of the pattern, remembering to add in the 0.5mm (1/4") seam allowance.
Instructions
1. Using the templates, cut out all the paper pattern pieces, making any size adjustments needed.
2. Using the insole templates, a marker pen and a craft knife, cut out two women's insole pieces and two men's from the cork.
3. Using the paper templates and heavy-duty scissors, cut out the remaining sole, upper and insole pieces for each pair of slippers.
For the women's slippers, cut two insoles from the pale pink leather, two soles from the turquoise leather and two uppers from the turquoise leather. For the men's slippers, cut two insoles and two soles from the grey leather and two uppers from the grey felt. Note that the men's slippers use the wrong side of the grey leather for the soles to give a suede finish.
4. Glue both pairs of leather insole pieces onto the top sides of the matching cork insole pieces with right sides (RS) up, making sure to align the edges. Neatly trim off any excess leather overhanging.
5. Using the heavy-duty scissors and sandpaper, trim and sand around the back heel of the soles to get a smooth finished edge.
6. Sew the matching uppers to the leather soles with RS together, remembering that for the men's slippers, the reverse of the leather soles is the RS. Use the end of the seam allowance on the sole to align the start and end sewing points on the uppers. Note that the seam allowance is 0.5cm (1/4").
7.Once sewn, trim back the seam allowance around the uppers by a few millimeters on both pairs, then turn the slippers RS out.
8. Spread adhesive glue inside the slipper soles and over the cork underside of the insole pieces.
9. Taking care not to let the glue spread onto the rest of the fabric, carefully slide one cork insole inside one slipper. Make sure the insole is positioned all the way down into the front of the slipper, then stick it down so the leather covers the cork at the heel in all directions. When sticking the insole down, work from the centre heel point back up towards the toes, working outwards. Push the seams to the sides, ensuring they don't get stuck under the sole. The sole should be completely flat. Repeat with each of the remaining slippers.
10. Using the heavy-duty scissors, trim any overhanging sole leather so there is a flush edge at the top and the bottom.
11. Measure the depths of the soles on both pairs of slippers. Cut two matching strips of leather for each pair; so two in grey and two in turquoise, measuring 25cm (9 7/8") x the depth of each sole.
12. Next, attach the leather strips around the edge of the heels to cover the cork. Apply a thin layer of glue to the back of each strip and stick it around the heel, tucking approximately 3cm (1 1/4") at either end inside the slippers. Once the strips are in place, neatly trim the ends inside the slipper opening.
13. For the women's slippers, make two medium-sized pom poms using the bright pink yarn and the pom pom maker. Trim them neatly, making sure to leave on the long yarn tails for sewing.
14. Make two 0.25cm (1/8") holes at the front of each women's slipper with the leather punch, using the image as a guide to placement.
Use the tapestry needle to thread half the pom pom tails through one hole and out the other, as shown.
15. Pull the pom pom onto the front of the slipper and knot in place. Trim any loose ends, then repeat to finish the second slipper.
