For a while I had been wanting to sew grocery shopping bags in order to replace the reusable ones you get at the supermarket (not very durable or washable).
The few rolls I kept have been put to good use.
At the beginning of the year when I organized my studio and got rid of unused stuff, I also went through all my fabrics.
I had quite a large quantity of rolls (especially for upholstery) that took a good amount of space and most of it, I knew, I’ll never use.
Based on those reusable ones I made several shopping bags out of cotton-canvas like, and in case you want to give it a try, here are the very simple steps.
Clip the bottom corners of front and back panels. Take the front panel and pin it to the long side panel wrong sides together all the way around, curving it as you make the turns.
Pin the other panel (back) to the side panel and repeat as before.
Stitch bias tape around the entire bag using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Keep the tape close to the seams. Do the same on the other side.
Fold over a small hem (1/2″) and iron down. Then fold a second larger hem (1 1/2″) and iron down. Stitch all the way around the top of bag.
Fold a small hem on each handle and iron down. Fold in half and sew along the long sides of each handle using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press each handle.
Place handles on the top part of the bag on the outside. Align the top edge of each side of the handle with the top edge of the bag. 2″ from the side seams and 5″ in between the inner edges of each handle.
Repeat with the other handle on the other side of the bag.
They are so easy and quick to make.
Plus knowing that over 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide each year and being aware of the damage and waste the use of plastic creates in our environment, is another good reason to make your own.
