How To Make a Drawstring Bag

How To Make a Drawstring Bag

DIY drawstring pouches, easy sew. Learn to Sew a Drawstring Bag - Beginner Sewing Project.

This little pouch is perfect for storing your small items, perhaps your sewing kit for when you're out and about. Or the cosmetic samples from your last trip to the perfume shop. I'm sure you'll find the perfect use for this little pouch.

 Materials needed:

- 0.20 m patterned fabric for the outside
- 0.10 m matching fabric for the tunnel
- 0.20 m fabric for the inside
- 1.50 cm cord

My tip for you:
If possible, choose a slightly thinner fabric for the lining; this will conform better to the curves of the seam.

Size approx. 19 x 19 cm

 Preparation
Create a pattern from the template. The template does not include seam allowances.

Cutting
(The cutting dimensions include a 0.75 cm seam allowance.)
Fabric for the outer layer
2 pieces 6 x 21 cm (for the drawstring)
2 pieces of the bag template plus seam allowance

Fabric for the casing
4 pieces 3.5 x 21 cm (for the drawstring)

Fabric for the lining
2 pieces of the bag template plus seam allowance

Sewing

Sew one casing piece right sides together to the
top edge of the bag pieces.

Sew the drawstring to the casing of the outer layer.

(See diagram)

Sew the lining with the casing to the drawstring.

(See diagram)

Place the two bag halves right sides together and pin them in place.

Now sew the two layers together all the way around, leaving a small opening at the bottom edge of the lining for turning.

Additionally, the seam on the outer edge of the tunnel remains open. Secure the seam just before and after the opening to prevent it from coming undone. Clip the seam allowance several times along the curves, stopping just short of the seam.

Turn the pouch right side out and close the opening. Fold the lining inwards so that the tunnel pieces lie flush on top of each other. Topstitch close to the edge above and below the tunnel, joining the layers of fabric together.

Divide the cord into two equal sections. Thread the sections in opposite directions through the tunnel using a safety pin.

You can secure the ends of the cord with a knot, a large bead, or wrap them tightly with contrasting yarn.
