Large Eco-Bag (Free Pattern & Tutorial)

Large Eco-Bag (Free Pattern & Tutorial)

DIY Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Own Large Eco-Bag (Free Pattern!)
This project was designed specifically for beginners, so even if you’ve never touched a sewing machine (or needle and thread) before, you can easily follow along!

This is a generous-sized eco-bag that features both short tote handles and a longer cross-body strap for versatility.

1. Preparing the Pieces (Cutting)
Finished Size: approx. 32 x 40 cm (excluding straps).
Note: All measurements include a 1cm seam allowance.

Outer Fabric A (Snowflake Pattern): 34 x 32 cm (cut 2)
Outer Fabric B (Chambray/Denim-like): 34 x 22 cm (cut 1)
Lining (Chambray/Denim-like): 34 x 82 cm (cut 1)
Tote Handles (Short): 8 x 34 cm (cut 2)
Cross-body Strap (Long): 8 x 90 cm (cut 1)
Extras: 1 leather label, red felt thread (for decorative stitching).

2. Making the Straps
Tote Handles: Fold the fabric in half (right sides together), sew along the long edge, and turn it right side out using forceps or a safety pin. Iron it flat so the seam is centered.

Cross-body Strap: Since it’s quite long, sew both ends towards the middle, leaving a small opening. Turn it inside out through that opening, then close it with a blind stitch (ladder stitch).
The Detail: For the tote handles, fold the middle 10cm section in half again and use a ladder stitch to join it. This creates a comfortable, rounded grip for your hand!

3. Assembling the Exterior
Join the snowflake pieces to the chambray piece. Place the "right sides" together and sew.
Once sewn, press the seam allowance towards the chambray side with an iron.
Pro Tip: Add a decorative touch! Use red felt thread to create accent stitches along the seam on the chambray side. If you don't have felt thread, any thick embroidery floss will do.
Attach your leather label at this stage to give it that "designer" look.

4. Joining the Bag
Flip the completed exterior piece so the right sides are facing each other (fold it in half). Sew along the side edges.
Do the same for the lining: fold it in half (right sides together) and sew the sides, but remember to leave a 10-15cm opening at the bottom for turning the bag later.

5. Final Assembly
Attach the handles and strap to the top edge of the exterior bag.
Place the exterior bag inside the lining (so right sides are touching).
Sew all the way around the top circular opening.
Reach through the opening you left in the lining and pull the whole bag through to the right side.
Close the lining opening, tuck it inside, and give the top edge a final iron and a top-stitch for a clean finish.

This is a great project for anyone looking to create a stylish and functional DIY accessory!
