Sewing Project - Bathroom Utility Baskets Sewn From Hand Towels. Illustrated Sewing Tutorial - How to Make a Terrycloth or Towel Basket for Christmas.
Not only do these have so much body due to the terry cloth material, but if they get dirty, they can be thrown in the washing machine with the towel load and are afterwards as good as new.
These are made just like the Christmas bags or baskets in the fabric bag tutorial. The only difference is that you are using different colored towels and you can omit the steps 2-5 (unless you also wish to applique a motif on this bag as well).
For this project you will need:
- 2 hand towels each sized 30 x 50 cm or 12 x 20 inches in
contrasting colors
- sewing machine and matching thread
- scissors
A seam allowance of 7 mm (about 1/4 inch) is already included in the measurements.
1. Pin the two towels together with the right sides facing each other and sew both of the short sides.
2. Turn the towel to the right side and fuse your motif onto the towel. If you have no fusible web, just pin the motif in place. The top of the motif should be pointing towards the towel edge (the short edge).
To avoid confusion, here a red tree was getting fused onto the white towel for the white bag. The later pictures as of step 4 will show pictures of the red bag with a white tree.
3. Sew a zig-zag stitch completely around the motif to hold it in place.
4. Now the motif is stitched on and you can continue sewing the bag.
5. Turn the bag around again so that the right sides are inside again.
6. Line up the seams of the short ends that you sewed together in step 1 and pin the towel in place.
7. Sew around the towel and leave an opening for turning it. We left about a 10 cm opening in the middle of the top left red area
8. Create a 4.5 cm square template and use a disappearing marker to mark a sqaure in each of the four corners and cut the square out.
You can increase or decrease the square size by a few millimeters if you like to change the height and width of the basket.
9. This is now how the bag looks.
10. Starting with the first corner, open the corner apart and match the middle seams and pin in place.
11. Sew a line across the seam. Repeat this for the remaining 3 corners.
12. Now you have a “floor” on each side.
13. This is now how the bag looks. Now you will pull the right side of the bag through the opening you left.
14. So the bag now looks like this.
15. The opening on the side now needs to be hand sewn.
16. Now insert the white area in the red area... or the red area in the white area, depending on which way you would like to have your bag.
17. Here the red area is on the outside.
18. Fold down the cuff...
19. And sew it in place if you like to keep it down.
