This basket or caddy is so perfect for holding treasures such as yarn for the next knitting or crochet project. Because of the batting, it can stand on its own. The stitched border around the rim of the bag was done on the sewing machine and gives the bag an extra something special.
These are really fun to make and lovely to look at, no matter which color you choose to make them. A 1 cm seam allowance is already included in the measurements and should be used for all the sewing of this project.
1. Select 2 fabrics that nicely fit together. The second piece of fabric will be the lining of the bag and the part that shows when you fold it over the rim. You will need from each fabric a 35 x 70 centimeter piece.
Also you need a piece of batting or fleece the same size.
2. If you like the fancy stitching along the rim of the bag, this is what you need to do. Place the lining on top of the batting. Stitch a fancy row about 5 centimeters from one of the short edges. If your stitching pattern has a direction (up and down), take it into consideration when stitching so it will be facing the right way when you fold over the rim.
If you do not wish to have any sort of stitching, then skip to step 4.
3. This is how the stitching looks that was used for this bag.
4. Now place the fabric on top of the lining/batting piece with the right sides facing each other.
5. Sew both short ends together.
6. This is one of the short edges, now that it has been sewn.
7. Now take the two seams created by sewing the short edges together and place these over each other. They will meet in the middle of the fabric. Pin across the long edges.
8. Create a 5 x 5 centimeter cardboard square and trace around it on all 4 corners of the fabric.
9. This is how one of the traced corners looks.
10. Cut now the squares from each of the corners. This is how the one end looks...
11. ...and this is how the other end looks.
12. Now sew along both long edges of the fabric. Leave an opening for turning on one side.
13. You still have those 4 open corners to contend to.
14. Take each corner and match the ends so that you sort of have what looks like a “T” junction. Pin these together and sew the edge together using a 1 cm seam allowance.
15. This is how the edge looks now.
16. At the moment, your basket looks like what seems to be a pillow case that is turned inside out with a hole in the side.
17. Turn the fabric through the hole. Sew the hole closed and then tuck the lining nicely within the exterior fabric. Fold the lining over the top to create a 5-7 centimeter cuff.
