Sew a wrap skirt in only one hour without a pattern! This easy tutorial has been designed with beginners in mind.

How To Make a Patchwork Skirt

This skirt is based on the classic 1970’s wrap skirts I remember my mother wearing when I was very young.

You can use almost any kind of light-weight fabric to make this skirt. Recycle a vintage bed sheet or an old tablecloth.

I pieced squares of scrap fabric together to make a rectangle measuring 2.5m x 1.3m.

For a maxi-length skirt you will need:

2.5m of light-weight fabric (2.8 yards) for front side
2.5m of lightweight fabric (2.8 yards) for reverse side
3 metres (3.3 yards) of 50mm wide bias binding
    Scissors
    Sewing machine
    Tape measure
    Pencil
    Dressmaking pins

1. Firstly, choose your waist radius:

Size small: waist radius = 28cm
Size medium: waist radius = 30cm
Size large: waist radius = 32cm
Size xlarge: waist radius = 34cm

2. Fold one of your pieces of fabric in half to make a square. Using a tape measure and pencil, mark your waist radius. Cut along the dotted line.

3. Decide on the length of your skirt. A knee-length skirt is approximately 65cm long. A maxi-length skirt is approximately 90cm long. Measure and mark with a pencil your desired skirt length. Cut along the dotted line.

4. Cut your other piece of fabric in exactly the same fashion. Open both pieces out flat.

5. With right sides together, lay both pieces of fabric on top of each other. Trace around a dinner plate with a pencil and cut two rounded corners.

6. Pin the two pieces of fabric together and stitch through all layers of fabric along the dotted line. Use a 1.5cm (3/4″) wide seam.

7. Turn the skirt right-way-out and iron seams flat.

8. Unfold the bias binding. Matching raw edges, stitch the binding to the waist of the skirt. The binding needs to overhang 1m (1yd) on either side to make the ties.

10. Fold the binding over to encase the raw edges. Line up the binding with the previous row of stitching. Pin and stitch binding in place. Fold the ties in half lengthways and topstitch together.
