How to make a half-circle wrap skirt.
Sew a wrap skirt in only one hour without a pattern! This easy tutorial has been designed with beginners in mind.
70’s-style half circle wrap skirt
This skirt is based on the classic 1970’s novelty wrap skirts I remember my mother wearing when I was very young.
You can use almost any kind of fabric to make this skirt. I used some leftover denim but you could also use a vintage bed sheet or an old tablecloth.
You will need:
Minimum of 2m of fabric (2.2 yds)
8m (8.75 yds) of 25mm (1″) wide bias binding
Scissors
Sewing machine
Tape measure
Pencil
Dressmaking pins
Optional: fusible web and fabric scraps for mushroom applique
1. Firstly, choose your waist radius:
Size small: waist radius = 28cm (11″)
Size medium: waist radius = 30cm (12″)
Size large: waist radius = 32cm (12.5″)
Size xlarge: waist radius = 34cm (13.5″)
2. Fold your fabric in half to make a square. Using a tape measure and pencil, mark your waist radius. Cut along the dotted line.
3. Decide on the length of your skirt. A knee-length skirt is approximately 65cm long. Measure and mark with a pencil your desired skirt length. Cut along the dotted line.
4. Open out your skirt. Trace around a dinner plate with a pencil and cut two rounded corners.
5. Unfold the bias binding. Matching raw edges, stitch the binding to the skirt.
6. Fold the binding over to encase all of the raw edges. Line up the binding with the previous row of stitching. Pin and stitch binding in place. Trim off any excess.
7. Stitch another piece of binding to the skirt around the waistline. Leave 1m (1 yd) of binding to overhang on either side for the waist ties.
8. Fold the binding over to encase the raw edges. Pin and stitch binding in place. Fold the ties in half lengthways and topstitch together.
10. Optional mushroom applique: download and print the mushroom applique pdf
11. Trace the mushroom onto the paper side of the fusible webbing. Trace mushroom tops and bottoms separately.
12. Cut out the shapes roughly and iron them onto the wrong side of your applique fabric.
13. Cut out the shapes and carefully peel off the paper, leaving the webbing attached to the fabric. Position them on your skirt and iron them down.
14. To secure the shapes to the fabric and prevent the edges fraying, use a zig-zag stitch or blanket stitch by hand.
