We’ve never seen a funnier pincushion—plus, this "cactus" looks great as a decorative piece, too! Here, we’ll show you how easy it is to sew this amusing little fellow, "Karl," yourself. P.S. He makes for a fantastic gift!
I’ve known about this since my grandmother’s day—I admired it even back then. Do you ever get annoyed when you have to fumble around to get your needles out of a little plastic box? Well, now you can do something about that.
With a cactus, your needles will be kept tidy and look decorative, too. I’ve put together a step-by-step guide for you here.
To make a cactus, you will need:
● A piece of fabric – green is a good choice, of course!
● Filling material, e.g., fluffy fiber balls or stuffing
● A small flower pot
● Decorative stones or sand
● And of course, your pins.
Tracing & Sewing a Cactus
Place two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing, and secure them with a few pins. Position the template on top and trace around the edge.
Place the fabric under your sewing machine and stitch along the traced line. Leave the bottom section open to serve as an opening for turning the piece right-side out.
Cutting Out & Making
Notches Next, cut out the cactus shape, leaving a margin of approximately 0.5 cm all the way around. To ensure the cactus doesn’t look lumpy once it’s turned right-side out, make small notches—or cut out tiny triangles—along the curved edges.
Turning & Stuffing
Now, turn the cactus right side out and iron it until smooth. Next, it’s time to add the stuffing. It’s best to stuff the "arms" first, followed by the rest.
This can be a bit tricky, but with a little patience, you’ll manage just fine. Finally, fold the bottom edge of the fabric inward and topstitch close to the edge.
Finishing touches
Now, all that’s left to do is plant the cactus! Simply place it into the flower pot and fill the space around it with the decorative stones. If you have a hot glue gun, you can also use it to secure the cactus inside the pot.
He looks quite nice on the windowsill :)
