How To Make a Simple Zipper Pouch

Simple tutorial - it's nothing groundbreaking, but it's useful for anyone wanting to draft the pattern for this little pouch so they can make it in whatever size they like. Let's get started:

On a sheet of paper, I draw two vertical lines spaced apart according to the desired width of the pouch. I also determine the pouch's height and mark it with points on the lines.

Now I decide on the depth and divide it by two. In this case, I have decided that the depth will be 6 cm, so I divide by two and add 3 cm to each vertical line, drawing two additional lines parallel to the first ones.

Now I draw a perpendicular line to mark the base, and using the points I marked for the height, I draw two slanted lines for the sides. I also mark the chosen depth (3 cm) at the bottom by drawing another line parallel to the base line, but extending only between the first two vertical lines I drew. And there we have the final pattern.

Using the pattern, I cut out two layers of my chosen fabric and two layers of the lining, leaving a seam allowance of about one centimeter. I also prepare some batting for structure and secure it to the outer fabric with a zigzag stitch all around the edges.

At this point, we proceed to attach the zipper using the appropriate presser foot, creating the usual sandwich arrangement: outer fabric (right side up), zipper, and lining (wrong side up).

Then I topstitch the zipper again, but without catching the lining.

Let's proceed to attach the zipper to the other side as well. This time, the "sandwich" is thicker: we have the two outer fabrics (right sides together), the zipper, and the two lining pieces (also right sides together).

Once that is done, I sew the two sides—carefully stitching over the zipper—and the bottom edges of the outer fabrics (without sewing the corners), as well as the bottom edges of the linings, leaving a sufficiently wide opening in the center (in addition to the corners) to turn the piece right side out.

Now all that remains is to close the corners, taking great care to align the center seam of the base with the side seams.

To finish, I turn everything right side out and close the opening in the lining with hidden stitches.

And here is the final result! You can make them in any size you like and add whatever decorations you fancy. I hope this has been helpful to someone and that I can keep my blog alive with new ideas—wishing everyone a creative year ahead!
