Lined denim summer bag. Denim Upcycle: How to Make a Practical Handmade Bag from Old Jeans.
You will need:
Denim fabric, cotton fabric, a piece of elastic cord, 1 button
Step 1: Cutting
From Denim (or outer fabric)
- for the bag: 2 x inverted trapezoid shapes (dimensions of your choice)
- 1 x side panel (2 x length + 1 x width of the bag)
- 2 x fabric strips for the handles
- 1 x inner bag lining
Cut out all the pieces—except for the inner lining and the handles—again from the lining fabric.
Step 2: Preparation
Fabric strips for the handles – fold the edges inward by 1 cm, then fold in half and topstitch (I stitched along both sides; I think it looks better).
Sew the pocket bag onto a pocket piece made of lining fabric.
TIP: For added stability, you can use, for example, iron-on interfacing or iron-on batting; both work well for this purpose.
Step 2: Sewing the bag pieces together
Take the side panel and sew the bag pieces onto it from both sides (placing the fabric right sides together).
Do the same with the lining fabric, but leave a small opening—about 15 cm long—on the side so the bag can be turned right-side out later.
Step 3: Handles, button, and elastic cord
Sew the handles onto the desired positions (symmetrically), placing them right sides together with the ends facing upwards.
Sew a piece of elastic cord onto one side of the bag (the back), and a button onto the other side (the front) in the corresponding position.
4: Sew the outer and inner sections together
Now take both bag sections (the one made of outer fabric and the one made of lining fabric), place them inside one another with right sides facing, and sew them together along the top edges.
The bag is finished.
