Easy Make-Up Clutch Tutorial

How to make an Easy Make-Up Bag Clutch, perfect for organizing your bag or for a gift. (Tuck a rainbow inside!)

I’ve often thought I should sew a make-up pouch just to keep all my lipgloss in order, so I created this one for us all.

Materials needed:

Fabric: 2 colors and/or patterns. This makes a great scrap fabric project.
    2 Zippers: 7″ or longer
    Sew-In Velcro Strips, 1 package
Ultra Firm Stabilizer (Pellon Peltex 71F works great): 1/4 of a yard
    Sewing Supplies + Sewing Machine
    Fabric Marking Pen
    Iron + Ironing Board

Before we get sewing, you will need to cut the following:

Pouch/Main: Cut 4 rectangles, each 8″L x 5″W in the main fabric, and cut another 4 in the lining fabric
    Pouch Zipper/Tabs: Cut 4 rectangles, each 3″L x 1-1/2″
Fold Over Clutch/Main: Cut 1 rectangle measuring 11-1/4″L x 9″W in main fabric and another in the lining fabric
    Fold Over Clutch/Tab: Cut 2 rectangles measuring 5″L x 3-1/2″
Fold Over Clutch/Interfacing: Cut 2 rectangles measuring 8″L x 5″W in the Ultra Firm Stabilizer
Velcro: Cut 4 strips that are each 6″ long and 1 strip 2″ long

Let’s start sewing!

Sew the Pouch:
Sew the zipper tabs: Fold the zipper tab in half. Press. Turn and fold each raw end towards the middle fold. Press again. Cut the zipper to be just shy of 7″. Insert a tab onto each end of the zipper. Place into your sewing machine and stitch the tab in place.

Place the zipper face down on the main fabric. There should be about 5/8″ less on each end. Pin in place. Change to the zipper foot on your sewing machine and stitch the zipper down.

Place the lining rectangle on top of the zipper. There zipper should be sandwiched in between the main fabric and lining fabric. Pin, place into your sewing machine and sew down the zipper. Repeat and sew the main fabric and then the lining fabric to the other side. Press.

Lay the pouch main fabric facing upwards onto your work surface. Measure 1/4″ down from the zipper and place the first Velcro hook strip. Pin and then stitch in place. Measure up 3/4″ up from the bottom edge and place then second Velcro hook strip. Pin and then stitch in place.

Sew the pouch together: Open the zipper. Place the main fabric pieces right sides facing and place the lining pieces right sides facing. Pin along the outside edge. Place into your sewing machine and stitch together with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Leave a small opening along the bottom lining edge. Press. Trim corners.

Turn right side out. Wiggle corners into place. Press again with a warm iron. Sew the lining opening closed. Repeat Steps 1-6 for second pouch.

Sew the Outside Clutch:
Lay the large rectangles (11-1/4″L x 9″W) right sides facing each other. Pin. Place into your sewing machine and stitch three sides together, leave one short end open. Backstitch at each end. Press. Trim the corners. Turn right side out and wiggle the corners into place. While sewing the outside clutch, also sew the clutch tab pieces together. Insert the two pieces of Ultra Firm Stabilizer inside. Wiggle into place and if they are too tight, take out and trim edges slightly. Press with an iron.

Turn and fold under the opening seam allowance. Press in place. Insert the tab into the opening and pin. Place into sewing machine and edge stitch around the entire outside edge.

Open the clutch and lay a pouch onto the either side. Find the corresponding Velcro loop placement for each side and lay onto the clutch lining surface. Pin if necessary. Place into sewing machine and stitch the Velcro loop strips down.

Find the Velcro hook and loop placement for the tab.

That’s it. Enjoy!
