Tutorial: Fabric Pumpkins

How to Sew a Pumpkin (DIY Fabric Pumpkins). DIY Easy Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial and FREE Pattern.

The finished size is about 7" around (not including the stem.)
You can enlarge the patterns to make different sized pumpkins. 

For this project you’ll need the following:
2 coordinating fat quarters of fabric (or ¼ yd. each) 
Pattern for PANEL and STEM
Felted wool for stem
Polyester fiber fill
Embroidery Floss 

1.  Wash and iron your fabric to shrink.  Then, using the panel pattern, Cut out six pieces. 
You’ll cut out 3 from each fabric.  I folded the fabric, pinned the pattern, and cut out all three at
once.  

2. Pin together three sets of the panels.  Make sure each fabric is pinned to a coordinating one, 
Sew down ONE side of each stack, using ¼” seam allowances. 

3. After sewing each set of panels, we’ll assemble these into a pumpkin shape.  Pin two of the pieces together, making sure no two fabric patterns are right next each other.  Sew along one side of this one as well.

4. With the last piece, you will sew all the way around, leaving a small space to turn inside out to stuff with filling.  (You can see in the picture above, this is where my double pink pins are.)  Now turn the
pumpkin right side out, and stuff!  After it’s stuffed, hand stitch the closing shut. 

5. Cut out 2 of the STEM pattern.  Blanket stitch around the top to sew together.  It will look like this when it’s done:     

6.  Now pull apart the bottom part and blanket stitch around that as well.  Now it will look like this:     

7.  Stuff some stuffing into the top of the stem and tack the 4 corners of the bottom directly to your pumpkin.  Enjoy!    

 

 Fabric Pumpkin Update!

  

I’ve worked out an alternate top for the fabric pumpkin pattern. This top involves much less hand stitching, well, actually none. If you don’t remember how to do a blanket stitch, or want to get your cute little pumpkins done faster than this pattern is for you!

It also involves some slight changes when you’re sewing your pumpkin. The changes are as follows:

Once you get your pieces cut out, sew them together so you have two groups of three pieces. This will give you two halves of the pumpkin. Below is one half of the pumpkin.

Then, sew up the stem with right sides facing each other. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Stuff the pumpkin stem and then pin it in between your two halves of the pumpkin. This is shown below. It's a little hard to see, but the stuffed pumpkin stem is between the two halves there.

Then sew along the edges and turn your pumpkin right side out. You’re pumpkin will now have a little stuffed stem on top. Continue to follow the rest of the instructions from the original post.

*Also included in the pattern above is an alternate felt pumpkin stem pattern that is more straight.
