How To Make a Simple Zipper Pouch | Beginner Sewing Tutorial. DIY Easy Lined Zippered Pouch.
You won’t even need your sewing machine’s zipper foot for this—I promise! And there’s no fiddly business of threading the zipper pull onto the tape, either—I promise! Even so, the little pouch is lined and looks lovely....
First, the cutting: Size: the desired finished size of the pouch plus a 0.75 cm seam allowance on all four sides. Cut two pieces from the outer fabric and two from the lining fabric. In my example, I am making a small coin purse for a girl starting school, so I cut the pieces to 11 x 11 cm.
You also need a zipper—ideally about 5 cm longer than the width of your fabric pieces. I always use continuous zipper tape because the sliders are already attached :) A standard zipper works just as well, though.
Turn the pieces so that the outer fabric and lining are placed wrong sides together. Press the edges neatly and cleanly:
Position the closed zipper against one of the pieces as shown in the photo, with the side that will become the outside of the pouch facing up.
Important: Leave a gap of a few centimeters between the zipper pull and the edge of the pouch. The top edge of the pouch should align flush with the zipper teeth (this is even clearer in the second photo).
If you want to be extra careful while sewing, you can secure the zipper in place using a little Stylefix.
Place the work under the machine as shown in the photos... Now you can see why it is important to leave a few centimeters of space between the zipper slider and the edge of the pouch; otherwise, the fabric won't fit under the presser foot.
Align the left edge of the presser foot flush with what will be the top edge of the pouch. The zipper teeth should be positioned immediately to the left. Sew in a straight line.
Align the second piece flush against the other side. Sew it on in exactly the same way as the first piece.
The whole thing should now look like this:
Now open the zipper about two-thirds of the way.
On the right side—now open—sew the zipper together just next to the fabric using a few forward and backward stitches:
Now fold the small pouch right sides together. Sew the side seams and the bottom edge. I use an overlock machine; if you don't have one, use the overlock stitch on your sewing machine or a tight zigzag stitch.
The whole thing looks like this:
Secure or sew in the overlock thread tails if necessary. Turn the pouch right side out.
Finished!
