Free Makeup Bag Sewing Pattern with Tutorial. I really like this bag because the zipper wraps around a corner, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.
Cutting:
- Bag body in your desired size (cut the front and back sections together with the bottom panel) from both outer fabric and lining
- 2 fabric strips for the sides, 8 cm wide (6 cm for the side + 2 cm seam allowance)
- 4 fabric strips matching the zipper length and 5 cm wide (apply interfacing to these)
- 1 zipper in your desired length
Let's get started:
1. Sew the long, narrow strips of fabric one by one onto the zipper tape, right side facing down; you can use the presser foot running along the zipper teeth as a guide for the spacing. Do this for both tapes on both sides.
This is how it should look from both sides at this stage.
2. Next, press the fabric strips back away from the zipper (see the image above) and topstitch through the fabric from the right side, a few millimeters away from the fold where the zipper and fabric meet.
3. Now, take one of the wide fabric strips and sew the short end—right sides together—to one side of the zipper.
4. The lining and outer fabric are now folded along the grainline (placed on the fold), and a small notch is cut through both layers of fabric 3 cm away from the fold edge to mark the spot.
5. Next, insert the zipper. Start at the notches on the outer fabric by positioning the side of the zipper *without* the fabric strip (note: the image shows it the other way around) so that its short edge lies exactly between the notches; pin and sew it in place, making sure to stitch only from star to star—leaving 1 cm unsewn at each end.
6. Then, you can snip the outer fabric up to the securely finished ends of the seams, allowing you to sew the corners until you reach the other side. At this point, you need to trim the piece of fabric so that it fits.
7. Now open the zipper slightly so that the bag can be turned right side out later, and sew the other side in place as well.
8. Next, measure the length of the fabric piece along the zipper, cut it from the remaining fabric (including a 2 cm seam allowance), and sew it to one side of the lining as described above. Leave a 10 cm opening in one of the side seams so the bag can be turned right-side out later.
9. Now turn the bag and lining inside out and sew them together at the zipper.
10. You can now turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining and then close it with a few hand stitches. You can topstitch the area where the zipper meets the side panel from the outside. FINISHED!
Addition: Zippered pocket within a fabric window
- Bonding: Apply a piece of the same size to the wrong side of both the facing and the corresponding area on the lining where the zipper is to be placed.
- Mark the zipper position: using a ruler, draw the zipper position on the wrong side of the fabric—a rectangle as long as the zipper and 1.5 cm wide.
- Place the facing right sides together on the pocket lining, aligning it with the marked zipper position.
- Stitch around the marked rectangle twice using a short stitch length (the stitching goes through both the lining and the facing).
- make a cut down the center, and cut the corners right up to just before the seam
- Fold in the lining facing, turn right side out, and press so that a rectangular opening is formed and the facing is not visible from the outside.
- Pin the zipper in place from the back of the opening, centering it so that it completely covers the opening.
- Topstitch twice along the right side of the opening; this automatically catches the zipper.
- Pin the inner pocket bag to the lining facing—aligning right sides together at the top and bottom—and sew with a 1 cm seam allowance.
- Pin the sides of the pocket bag together and sew.
Complete!
