Pretty and practical, this handy, patched fabric roll for your jewellery will help keep all your treasures and valuables safe and in one place.
MATERIALS
6 fat quarters of pretty fabrics in aqua, mauve and lime green (one of these will be the lining)
1 fat quarter of solid aqua
1 fat quarter of 272 Thermal wadding (Vilene)
1, 18cm aqua zip
1, large green button
15cm Mauve round elastic
2 sets of Mauve Kam snaps
Label (bought or self-made)
1.2m of bias binding
Water soluble marker
Small amount of polyester wedding (scraps will do)
GOOD TO KNOW
Use ½cm seam allowance throughout.
Don’t worry about the raw edges, these will be hidden in the binding when the make is completed.
To make your own bias binding, cut 3cm wide strips on the diagonal (bias). They need to be long enough to go around the entire border – join strips if necessary. The bias strips ensure that the edging will sit neatly around curves. When you have enough, in one continuous strip, fold in half lengthwise and iron. Fold the raw edges into the centre and iron. Hand sew into place. You can use a bias strip maker if you like.

TO SEW
1. Take the piece of wadding and the fabric strips. Attach the strips to the wadding to form the padded outer as follows: Place two strips right sides together onto one end of your wadding and sew down the right hand side.
2. Open the strips out and then add a third strip over the top of the second one and sew down the right hand side.
3. Continue like this until all of the strips are added.
4. Topstitch each side of these seams to quilt. Draw a couple of random lines at 90 to the first quilting ones; about 6cm apart and topstitch each side of these too.
5. Cut a piece of elastic 15cm long and fold it in half. Use the label to attach the elastic roughly half way along the quilted panel. Attach the button on the part of the outer destined to be the top.
6. Trim the outer, pieced and quilted fabric to 21cm x 36cm size and put it aside for now whilst you continue with the lining.
Make the zipped pocket
7. Take the two zipped pocket fabric pieces 21cm x 15cm (one plain aqua and one patterned fabric)
and place them right sides together. Find the middle with a vertical crease and then measure down 3.5cm from the top edge. Draw a box 14cm x 1cm (sewing line). Draw a line up the middle with four angled lines (cutting lines).
8. Sew around the outer box only.
9. Carefully cut along the other marked lines and then ‘post’ the plain aqua lining through the gap, to the outer side. Smooth it down and press carefully.
10. Position and then tack the zipper in place on the lining side. Sew in place using neat stitching and working from the right/outer side.
11. Fold the raw edges under and topstitch the zipper pocket into place on the bottom part of the lining.
Make the ring roll
12. Take the 20cm x 6cm piece of fabric, fold in half along the length with right sides together and sew along the long edge and one end too. Turn the right way out and position the seam at the centre back. Attach one half of the Kam snap to the closed end.
13. Stuff the tube with polyester fibre.
14. Attach the raw end of the tube to one side edge of the lining, 3cm above the zipped pocket – trim if you need to. Attach the other half of the Kam snap set to the lining on the opposite side, 2cm in from the left hand edge.
Make the snap pocket
15. Take your two pieces of 21cm x 11cm fabric (one plain aqua and one patterned fabric). With right sides together, sew along both long edges. Turn to right side and carefully press. Topstitch along the upper edge.
16. Topstitch the lower edge of the pocket in place on the lining, 3cm above the ring roll. Sew the pocket sides to the lining, taking a narrow turning and leaving edges raw.
17. Attach one half of the Kam snap set to the middle of the pocket body 5.5cm down from the top edge.
Make the snap pocket flap
18 . Take the two 20cm x 10cm pieces of fabric for the snap pocket flap and place them right sides together. To create the rounded corners of the flap, find something oval to draw around and do this on both corners of one edge of the flap using the water soluble marker. Cut away excess fabric, leaving 0.5cm seam allowance.
19. Sew all around the pocket flap, leaving a gap on the straight edge for turning out. Clip the curves and turn out. Topstitch around sides and curved edge of the pocket flap. Fold in the raw edges along the straight edge.
20. Attach the other side of the Kam snap to the middle of the pocket flap. Line the two Kam snaps up and then topstitch the flap to the lining in the appropriate place.
21. Place the pieced outer and the pocketed lining with wrong sides together. As with the snap pocket flap, round off the corners by drawing around something appropriate and cut the corners to a curve. Baste the layers together.
20. To complete, bind all outer edges with your bias binding.
