How to Make a Easy Drawstring Bag

How to Make a Easy Drawstring Bag

This DIY Drawstring Bag is fun and simple to make. There are so many great fabrics available in squares now that it’s also an affordable craft. You could also make this bag from fabric scraps left over from another project. The bag can be made in any size or in multiple sizes for a set.

Supplies:

2 pieces of fabric – I wanted the bag to be reversible with 2 different prints
    Scissors
Circle template (or a plate the right size will do)
    Fabric pen
    Sewing machine and thread
Ribbon, yarn, or cord for drawstring
    Safety pin

Instructions:

Begin by laying your fabric out and cutting two equal size circles. Again, the circles can be any size so long as both pieces are the same size. The larger the circles, the larger the finished bag.

Lay the circles together with the right side of the fabric facing in.

Carefully sew the two circles together leaving approximately 3/8” seam. You will need to leave an opening about 1 ½” wide to turn the fabric right side out. This will also be used for the drawstring later.

When the circles are sewn together, turn them right side out. Gently push the seam from the inside to make it a perfect circle. Press if necessary.

Next, sew a line around the inside edge of the circle. This will go through both pieces of fabric and should be about 1” in from the edge.

Tie the ribbon, or in my case the yarn, to a safety pin. Insert the pin and drawstring into the opening that was left in the fabric. Use the safety pin to feed and pull the drawstring through the pocket you created around the outside edge of the fabric. Pull the drawstring back out when you’ve reached the opening from the other side.

By hand or with the sewing machine carefully sew the opening closed between the two pieces of the drawstring.

You can tie a knot in the two piece of sting so the drawstring is continuous or you can knot the ends so the drawstring can be used to tie the bag shut.

Pull the drawstring tight, evenly gathering the fabric.

You have a fun reversible drawstring bag! The size I made was from a 10” round and is perfect for holding little trinkets, change, hair accessories and more!
