How to Make Book Pincushion | DIY Book Pincushion. Free Sewing Tutorial.
Let’s start with the cushion itself: cut two 7x10 cm rectangles of patterned cotton, two 7x5 cm rectangles of striped cotton, and two 5x10 cm rectangles of striped cotton. I always add a 1 cm seam allowance to these measurements.
Sew the striped cotton to the patterned cotton, right sides together, starting along the longer edges and stitching only along the line previously marked with an erasable pen.
Do the same on the short sides.
Join all four sides of the striped fabrics, trimming the excess from the corners.
Now join the remaining patterned fabric, pin it in place, and sew along the entire perimeter, leaving an opening of about 3 cm for turning it right side out.
Once turned right side out, push out the corners thoroughly and stuff with batting (like pillow filling). Then, sew the opening left earlier using a hidden stitch.
Now, move on to preparing the cover. Cut a 12x9 cm rectangle of linen, a 15x12 cm rectangle of patterned fabric, a 24x12 cm rectangle for the inner lining, and a 24x12 cm rectangle of iron-on interfacing. Always leave a 1 cm seam allowance.
Sew the linen to the patterned fabric and topstitch. Press the fusible interfacing onto the wrong side.
This is the pincushion design I used, but you can let your imagination run wild with whatever subjects you like.
Trace the design onto the thermoadhesive paper, iron on the wrong side of the fabric and cut out.
Remove the remaining backing paper and iron onto the spot where you want to place the appliqué. Mark any missing details with an erasable pen.
Using a contrasting thread, sew with free-motion technique by disengaging the machine's feed dogs and using the appropriate presser foot.
Embellish as you like; I attached small buttons to the heads of the pins, and created and then sewed on labels using fabric stamps and ink pads.
Place two small ribbons in the center of the short sides of the rectangle and secure them with a pin.
Place the two rectangles right sides together and sew around the entire perimeter, leaving an opening for turning.
After turning it right side out and pressing it, topstitch along the entire perimeter to close the opening used for turning.
Using hidden stitches, sew the small cushion to the cover. Then, sew the two upper corners facing the cover as well, as if creating a book.
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial;
