Reversible Spiral Basket Tutorial

Today I want to share a fun tutorial for making small fabric baskets. The finished size of the basket is 7cm(w) x7cm(d) x9cm(h). This project is perfect for consuming your scrap fabric. This project is perfect for consuming your scrap fabric. Also these baskets are reversible.

One side has a spiral patchwork pattern with four strips of quilting weight cotton fabric. The other side is just a single piece of home decor fabric. This project is very easy and quick. I hand-sewed these baskets in the picture. But of course you can use your sewing machine. It would be much quicker like a flurry of wind! And small fabric baskets are versatile.

Materials for exterior:
Four strips of quilting weight cotton.

Materials for lining and trim:
Medium weight canvas or home decor fabric.

1. Arrange four strips of cotton in pinwheel shape like as shown in the picture. Sew two pieces next each other right sides together. 

Note: Don't sew seam allowances. Make a back stitch on both ends.

Open two pieces and press seam allowance toward short side. Repeat same process to other two pieces.

2.Next, connect two pieces which you sewed in process 1.

Sew two pieces right sides together like as shown in the picture.

Press seam allowance toward short sides. It should look like this on wrong side.

3.Next, make sides of basket. Sew sides of strips next each other, right sides together. One by One, following numbers in the picture.

Before you sew, make a notch at the corner of bottom. Cut ONLY ONE LAYER. Be careful NOT TO CUT the stitches you already made!

This is showing how to assemble a side of basket. Fold light blue strip diagonally along light green strip, putting two sides together. Sew from bottom to the end of light blue fabric.

NOTE: Do not sew seam allowance.

After a side of basket is sewn, it should look like this. Press seam allowance toward short strip.

Sew all four sides. The picture is showing the view from the bottom of basket (wrong side).

4.Turn over. Then Cut off four triangles on the top.

The exterior is done.

5.This is the measurement for lining. Mark these lines with pencil on wrong side of lining fabric.

6.Fold in half with right side together. Sew both end from top to the mark as shown in the picture.

7.Make gussets on the corners of the bottom. Fold seam allowance of the side to one direction. The bottom of the basket should be 7cmx7cm square.

Cut the excess leaving 1cm seam allowance.

7.Insert lining into exterior wrong sides together. Align the tops and bottom corners together and pin the top.

8.Fold 1cm of bias tape and put it to the top of basket with right sides together. Secure the tape with pins along the top.

Sew the tape at 0.7cm from the top edge. At the end, over wrap 1cm and sew on the first end.

9.Turn over. Fold the tape two times to cover the raw edge of the top. 

Sew the tape onto lining with blind stitches.

The REVERSIBLE Patchwork spiral basket is finished!

A fun twisted pattern on the out side! More fun! The bottom has four triangles in pretty colors!

This size (7cmx7cmx9cm) is perfect for storing my phone supplies, sewing notions, ribbons and much more! But I am planning to make larger ones. Because it is FUN!
