Zipper Wallet DIY Free Tutorial

Zipper Wallet DIY Free Tutorial

I needed a new wallet. I sat down and thought about how I used my previous wallet, and what items I would want in a new design to suit my needs. As it turns out, I wanted a wallet that would hold my money, credit cards, change, and cell phone. Maybe even my keys or some sunglasses if room spared. I wanted a wallet with a leather exterior, 2 inner pockets, and lots of pockets for credit cards or other annual membership cards.

1. We will start off by making the credit card pockets, with these accordion folds. Iron on the interfacing to the wrong side of the ’15” x 8″ Cotton Accordion Fold’ fabric.

2. Take your 15″ x 8″ piece of cotton fabric, and mark 1″ down from the top, 6″ down from the top, and 11.5″ from the top.

3. Fold up the bottom mark (pin), so that it meets 1″ below the middle mark. The fold should be on the inside. Press.

4. Fold up the middle mark, so that it too is 1″ below the top mark. Press. Repeat for both accordion fold fabric pattern pieces.

6. Iron on the interfacing to the wrong side of the 7″ x 9″ Cotton Pocket Lining. Place the zipper right sides together (teeth face down) to the top 7″ edge of the Exterior Cotton Pocket. Baste stitch 1/8″ away from the edge using a zipper foot to secure in place.

7. Place Lining on top of Exterior pocket, right sides together. Pin in place, and sew using a zipper foot. Press open.

8. Fold Exterior up towards the opposite edge of the zipper, so that they are right sides together. Pin in place, making sure that the zipper itself is at least 4 – 5″ open.

9. Fold the Lining up towards the other side of the zipper, so that the opposite zipper edge is sandwiched in between. Pin in place and sew.

10. With the zipper in the middle, place the exterior and lining right sides together and pin the side edges. Leave 4″ open on one side of the bag – on either the exterior or lining side of the bag. Sew.

11. Trim seam allowance, and turn right side out through opening. Whipstitch opening closed, and push lining inside of bag. Repeat for other bag if 2 are desired.

12. Pin bottom edges of both zipper pocket to the bottom raw edge of (1) accordion piece. Baste stitch 1/4″ away from edge to secure.

13. Place other accordion piece on top of zippered pockets, matching all raw edges. Pin bottom edge in place and sew. Trim seam allowance.

14. Baste stitch side seams closed. Place entire accordion pocket piece on top of the 8″ x 10″ Cotton Lining, aligning it in the very center. Sew along the side seams, 1/4″ away from the edge.

15. Sew a line down the center of each accordion pocket to the center to create the credit card pockets.

16. Sandwich the outer edge of the 18″ Zipper between (2) 18″ x 1.75″ Cotton Zipper Placket pattern pieces, matching up the raw edges. Pin in place and sew around the sides and long outer edge (being sure not to sew the other side of the zipper when sewing the sides).

17. Turn fabric right side out and press. Repeat for other side of zipper. Baste stitch the raw outer edges closed.

18. Fold the 8″ x 10″ piece of leather, bringing together the 8″ sides. Mark a fold in the center. Pin the outer edge of one side of the zipper, starting at the top of the zipper, right sides together to the purse. Start with the top of the zipper, at the center fold, and bring it up and around the side, corner edge, and all the way around to the opposite side center fold of the purse. Your zipper will be slightly longer than the purse, that is ok. Let the 1″ hang off. Baste stitch all around 1/8″ away from the edge to secure.

19. Place the lining right sides together with the leather and zipper, pin lining to the outer edge of the zipper (where you just baste stitched), and sew.

20. Open up the leather purse, and bring the other side of the zipper up and around the other side. Pin the outer raw edge to the leather, pin and baste stitch.

21. Bring the unsewn side of the lining up and around the bag, completely enclosing the bag itself within, so that the raw edges of the lining are right sides together with the raw edges of the leather sandwiching the zipper in between. Pin around, leaving a 6″ opening for turning. Sew, leaving the 1″ zipper tail out at the bottom edge. This will be bulky, and slightly difficult. Make sure to sew slowly, and push fabric out of the way when possible.

22. Turn wallet right side out through opening in lining, push out all corners, and press where possible. Whipstitch opening closed. If needed, whipstitch to reinforce bottom folded leather edge of wallet to secure zipper in place.
And you are finished!
