Chevron Quilt Pattern with No Triangles Tutorial

Chevron Quilt Pattern with No Triangles Tutorial

I've put together a tutorial on how to make a chevron quilt with no half square triangles.

In my opinion this is a much simpler and easier way to get the chevron pattern, and it is a huge bonus that you don't have to wrestle with the bulk you usually get with the HST method.

In this tutorial I've only made a few blocks which I've turned into a cushion for M's bed, but you can make as many as you like to make up a quilt.
Let's get started... it's super easy, I promise!

Step 1.

Most obvious, pick your fabrics. You will need at least 1 neutral colour but the rest is up to you. I've chosen 4 different prints but you can do more or less, completely your choice!

Step 2.

For this size block, 4 1/2" square, I cut strips at 2 1/2" wide, which also makes this tutorial jelly roll friendly.
You will need as many neutral as coloured.

Step 3.

Sew one neutral strip to a coloured one. I've used 1/4" seams for this project. If your using a light neutral you will want to press your seam toward the coloured fabric.

Step 4.

Now trim your strips into square blocks at 4 1/2" each.

Step 5.

In this step you will start to see the chevron pattern. Lay out you blocks as shown below. (click on image for a closer look)

Step 5.

Sew your blocks together diagonally.

Step 6.

And then each row together, matching block seams. You will end up with a quilt top like this.

Step 7.

Now just trim the edges to finish up your quilt top. I always trim my quilt top 1/4" from the last corner to give it a nice clean edge.

And that's it. Super easy... no fuss, no muss!

If you would like to make bigger blocks change the measurements in step 2 and step 4. For example,

3" strips  =  5 1/2" blocks
3 1/2" strips  = 6 1/2" blocks
4" strips  = 7 1/2" blocks
and so on

If your after a different block size, all you need is this quick formula...
double the strip width, minus 1/2".
