DIY Denim Pencil Case Tutorial

Back2School Homemade Jeanius Calico cat Pencil Case can be made using an old jeans of your son or daughter. Who can’t remember her schooldays. After the summer holidays of six weeks you’ve become taller and growing a size. You fitted your clothes with your mother and your favourite dress and jeans were to small. Perhaps your little sister was wearing your special dress now. You felt the prick of tears but then your mother decided to make something useful from your old jeans. Something you could use during the coming school year. The Back2School Homemade Jeanius  Calico cat Pencil Case is perhaps one of those useful things one can make.

Back to school with brand new pencils in a brand new pencil case. I started searching for fabric when I cam across some leftover old jeans fabric. I decided to sew them together to make a kind of rag looking piece of fabric. This fabric would be the base for the Jeanius Calico cat Pencil Case.

Preparations

You can do this project together with the kids cutting all kinds of rectangles, fabric stripes or triangles. Form a great design and sew it together with a sewing machine.

I used fabric stripes and used for one the overlock finish that is sewn straight on the right side of the fabric. The jeans patchwork piece of fabric has some heavy weight fusible stretch interfacing to give it body.

The nose is a small remnant piece of pink fleece and attached to the face with a small zigzag stitch. The whiskers and mouth is made with a decorative stitch found on my sewing machine. Make the eyes or use goggly eyes.

I used the fabric that appeared when I unpicked the jeans back pockets for the ears. The feet are a layer of jeans and fabric used for the inside. Legs and tail are made of the overlock finish.

Sewing the pencil case together

The piece of jeans fabric is now cut to measure (if you decide to use my pattern the length will be 27 cm, the width depends on the length of your zipper). Sew the zipper in. The body is now ready. I made an exposed zipper. You’ve now finished the body. Use heavy weight fusible interfacing to give  both circles also body. Stitch te face with the ears and legs on the ‘body’. Repeat this for the back and stitch with tail. I made the tail of a long piece of fabric that’s folded into two. Kids can now easily carry the Jeanius Calico cat Pencil Case.

The last steps

You can finish the Jeanius Calico cat Pencil Case with lining. An old dress shirt from toys husband or perhaps an old blouse or T-shirt from one of the kids are great ideas to use. Back2School Homemade Jeanius Calico cat Pencil Case is almost finished. You only have to sew the feet on the legs and your Back2School Homemade project is ready for use.

-Prepare the zipper at both ends

-Sew the zipper in the body

Making the legs and tail
-I used the finishing side of the side seams of the jeans by cutting them 7 mm offthe overlock stitch. You need about 20 centimeters for both legs and 40 centimeters for the tail.
-I used my overlocker to make a second row of stitching using blue yarn and red yarn on the left hand needle for the tail and white yarn for the legs
-Fold double and sew with your sewing machine using a straight stitch together using red and white yarn. Let the stitch run just between both red or white stitches of the overlock stitch

Making the feet

-Stitch the two layers of fabric (one jeans an one lining) with the wrong side on the inside together using a 3 mm straight stitch
-Cut the yarn and leave a long piece of yarn on the fabric. This will be used to pull the feet tougher when they are slightly filled with fiberfill
-Make small cutes towards the stitching line without cutting the stitch
-Unravel both fabrics

-Use a small amount of fiberfill to fill the feet and pull carefully on the thread to close the circle and make the feet

-Place one end of the leg in the feed and sew together using your sewing machine or by hand stitching
