Instructions

Cutting

From the fabric you will use for the outside of your On-the-Go Art Satchel (outer fabric) cut

    One 15" (38cm) x 9 1/2" (24cm) rectangle
    Two 6 1/4" (16cm) x 9 1/2" (24cm) rectangles

From the fabric you will use for the inside of your On-the-Go Art Satchel (inner fabric) cut

    One 15" (38cm) x 9 1/2" (24cm) rectangle
Two 3 1/2" (9cm) strips, cut selvage to selvage (so approx. 45" (112cm) each)

From the felt cut

    One 14 1/2" (37cm) x 9" (23cm) rectangle
    One 30" (76cm) x 1 1/2" (3.75cm) rectangle

From the interfacing cut

    Two 6 1/4" (16cm) x 9 1/2" (24cm) rectangles

Strap

Take the two 3 1/2" (9cm) strips you cut from the inner fabric and sew two short sides together to make one long piece.  Press seam open.  Trim the length down to measure 30" (76cm) long.

Now press under a 1/4" (6mm) along each long edge.  Take your 30" (76cm) long piece of felt and lay it along one pressed edge of the fabric, tucking it in under the 1/4" (6mm) fold.

Align pressed edges of fabric and pin together all the way along making sure the felt stays tucked under the 1/4" (6mm) fold all the way.

Stitch close to pressed edge.  I also stitched along the other long edge because I think it looks neat and gives a bit of added strength to the strap.

Put the strap aside.

Pockets

Fuse interfacing to two pocket pieces following manufacturers instructions.

Press under 1/2" (1.5cm) then 1/2" (1.5cm) again along one long edge of each pocket piece.  This will become the top of the pocket so make sure if your fabric has a directional print you have it facing the right way up!

Stitch close to pressed edge on both pockets.

Attaching pockets

Lay your inner piece of fabric flat in front of you, right side up.  Take one of your pockets and lay it on top of the inner fabric, also right side up, matching the raw edges together.  Pin to hold.

Now working from left to right mark the stitch lines to make the channels for the crayons with your dress makers chalk.  Make your first mark at 1 1/4" (3cm) then 7/8" (2.25cm) apart eight more times.

Stitch from the bottom edge up to just past the top of the pocket, then leaving your needle down, raise your presser foot and rotate the fabric 90 degrees, sew across to your next marked line, pivot fabric again and sew down along this line making sure you sew past where the 1/4" (6mm) seam will be along the bottom edge.

Continue in this manner until all the channels have been sewn.

Putting it all together

Take your outer fabric and lay it wrong side up in front of you.  Centre your felt rectangle on top of it, leaving a 1/4" (6mm) border all the way around the edge.  Pin together.

Mark two straight lines along the long edge of the lining 3 1/4" (8.25cm) in from the each edge.

Stitch along these lines to hold the lining in place.  Put this piece aside for now.

Now take the inner piece of fabric with the one pocket attached and lay it out in front of you.

Mark the centre of the long edge of the fabric just by folding it in half and creasing it alittle at each edge.  this will help you centre the strap.

Spread the inner piece of fabric out flat again.  Now take the other pocket and line it up along the other end, aligning raw edges.  Pin the strap in place as pictured above, centring it with your crease marks.  Make sure the strap is not twisted and then fold it up neatly so it doesn't get in the way when you're sewing.

Take the outer fabric piece and lay it wrong side up on top of your inner fabric, sandwiching all layers together.

Make sure all raw edges are aligned, then pin together.

Now starting at the short end where the crayon pocket is, sew around the perimeter, leaving a 4" (10cm) opening for turning.  Make sure you reverse stitch at the start and end.

Trim the corners to reduce the bulk, watch you don't cut your stitching though!

Turn the satchel right side out through the opening, flipping the strap and pockets to the right side if needed.  Put your hand inside through the opening and push the corners out nice and neat.

Press, turning under 1/4" (6mm) seam at opening.

Mark middle of short edge and place hair elastic (or knotted hat elastic) into opening, making sure you push it in far enough so you can easily sew over it - you wouldn't want your needle  to break on that little metal piece when you're so close to finishing now would you...

Pin the elastic in place and machine stitch the opening closed, sewing close to pressed edge.  Reverse stitch at beginning and end and several times over elastic to keep it firmly in place.

Position button on outside of satchel, so that it sits opposite the elastic.

I positioned mine in about an inch from the short edge but position yours according to the length of elastic you have - you want it to be taut when it's done up but not so tight it's hard to get open and closed.

Slip your hand inside the diary pocket to stitch the button to the outside of the satchel.  Make sure you don't sew through the pocket for two reasons - 1. It hides the stitching inside the pocket 2. It won't hinder the VA diary going all the way into the pocket - trust me on this!

Now insert your Visual Arts diary and crayons.
