Are you a beginner sewer? Then this tutorial is for YOU!
This super easy reversible bag is a great project to begin your sewing career!
-3 coordinating fabrics (one for the outside, one for the inside, and one for the straps)
First, cut out all the pieces.
cut 4 rectangles measuring 18″ x 23″ (two out of one fabric, two out of the other). These are the bag pieces.
cut 2 rectangles 3″ x 23″ out of the strap fabric.
Take two of the matching bag pieces and place them right sides together and sew up three of the sides (as the graphic above shows).
Repeat for the other bag pieces.
Now take the strap pieces and press along the long side and sew a seam along that long side.
Do this for both straps.
Grab your safety pin and pin one side of the short sides of the casing you created. Push it all the way through the casing to turn the strap right side out.
When the straps are all the way right sides out press them flat.
Sew two seams on either side of the straps for reinforcement.
(like this ^)
Take one of the bag pieces and lay it wrong sides out. Pin a short edge of one of the straps 5″ in from the side seam. Don’t pin all the way through… only pin THAT side of the bag piece.
Pin the other side of the strap.
Repeat this with the other side of the bag and the other strap.
Use a zig-zag stitch to attach the strap about 1/2″ from the top. Go over the strap several times.
Repeat this for the other end of that strap and the other strap.
Leave that bag piece wrong sides out. Take the other bag piece and turn it right sides out.
Press 1/2″ towards the wrong sides on both bag pieces.
Put the bag piece with the wrong sides out inside the bag with the right sides out.
Once the bag pieces are inside the other bag pieces, align and pin the side seams.
Pin all the way around the top of the bag. (Be sure to pull the straps out so they don’t get sewn inside!)
Topstitch all the way around the top of the bag!
And THEEEERRRRE’S your reversible tote!
