Easy Boxy Zipper Pouch Tutorial

And here it is—a little pouch: a mini-bag made from oilcloth. Practical, simple, quick to sew, and pretty—perfect for tucking under the Christmas tree at the last minute! ;-)

The "mini-pouch" pouch can be used for pens, small toy figures, nail polish, craft supplies—or, of course, for items like adhesive bandages, homeopathic pellets, and the like.

Whether you want to use it at home, tuck it into your handbag, or add a strap to hang it on a bicycle or stroller, it’s a lovely sewing project and a perfect way to use up scraps of oilcloth.

Materials

Approx. 30 x 40 cm oilcloth or coated cotton (you can also use various scraps)
26 cm zipper (or continuous zipper tape with a slider)
Optional: KAM snaps

Sewing Tips

You can use a standard universal sewing machine needle when working with oilcloth.
Sewing is easier if you increase the stitch length slightly (I use a stitch length of 3).

If you are sewing on the right side (the coated side) of the oilcloth, it is helpful to use a Teflon presser foot, or place a piece of parchment paper (or wax paper) between the fabric and the presser foot to prevent it from sticking.

Instructions

1. Print out the pattern and transfer the shapes onto the wrong side (the uncoated side) of the oilcloth using a pencil. Cut out the pieces. The seam allowance is already included in the pattern (indicated by the dashed lines).

2. Inner pocket: Fold the top edge of pattern piece B over by 1 cm (wrong sides together) and secure it with a line of stitching from the right side.

3. Place pattern piece B onto one of the pattern pieces A, aligning the bottom edges (wrong sides together). Sew along the sides and the bottom edge, staying within the seam allowance.

4. Zipper (RV): Sew a narrow fabric strip (Part D) to both the left and right sides of the zipper. Place the right side of the fabric against the zipper teeth.

5. Fold the strips and the seam allowances away from the zipper. Topstitch along both sides of the zipper from the right side to secure the seam allowances in place. The zipper strip should now be 6 cm wide; if it is not, trim the strip symmetrically to this width.

6. Fabric ring: Place one short side of pattern piece C, right sides together, against one short side of the zipper fabric strip. Sew the two pieces together.

7. Topstitch the seam from the right side with one or two parallel lines of stitching, thereby securing the seam allowance.

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 on the opposite side.

9. Side panels: Fold the side panels (Pattern Piece A) lengthwise and mark the center of the top and bottom edges with a small notch. Fold the fabric ring so that the two ends of the zipper meet exactly. Use this method to determine the top and bottom center points of the fabric ring and mark them with a notch.

10. Attach one side panel (Pattern Piece A) to one side of the fabric ring, right sides together, using fabric clips. Begin at the top and bottom notches, then work your way outward along the corners and sides.

11. Sew the side panel in place. To do this, open the zipper and make several small cuts into the fabric strip along the curves, staying within the seam allowance.

12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for the second side panel (pattern piece A). All done! :-)

Optional: Hanging Loop

To add a hanging loop to the back of the pouch—for use on a stroller or bicycle—you will need two narrow strips of oilcloth (pattern piece E). Follow the main instructions up to step 9, then complete the following steps first:

Fold both pieces (E) lengthwise, right sides together, and sew around the edges to join them.
Trim the edges evenly and close to the seam, and round off the corners.
Position and secure the two finished strips—following the markings—onto the right side of pattern piece A (the piece intended to be the back of the pouch).

Now you can proceed with steps 10, 11, and 12. Finally, attach a Kam snap to each hanging strip, and the corresponding counterpart on the back of the bag, just above the seam.

By the way, the mini pouch is also a great way to use up scraps of oilcloth. Since there’s no need for a lining or for finishing any raw edges, these little pouches can be whipped up in no time. But be warned: making them can be truly addictive! :-)
