DIY Easy Tote. How To Make A Tote Bag. DIY Free Sewing Tutorial - Sew a tote bag.
Make this adorable Pottery Barn Kids knock-off tote bag for your favorite little one! I've had this idea swirling in my mind for a while and I'm so excited to share this tutorial with you!
You will need:
1/3 yard of a patterned fabric (the sides of your bag)
1/4 yard of an accent fabric (the handles and bottom)
Coordinating thread
3 yards coordinating double fold bias tape
2 fun, coordinating buttons
1. Cut out your pieces:
(4) 10" wide by 8" tall pieces from your patterned fabric.
(1) 10" wide by 8.5" tall piece of accent fabric.
(2) 26" long by 3" wide strips of accent fabric.
2. Make the side panels of your bag. Start with the (4) pieces of 10" x 8" pieces of patterned fabric. Pair them up, Right sides together and pin along the top long edge. Sew along the top edge, using a 1/4" seam. Turn right side out, lay flat and press, pressing the seam to one side. Fold in half, with right sides out and press seam flat again. Top stitch 1/2" from the seam edge.
3. Make the straps. Take your (2) 26" x 3" strips, fold them in half lengthwise and press with right sides together. Stitch the long edges together using a 1/4" seam. Turn the tube right side out, center the seam and press. Top stitch 1/4" in along both long edges of your straps.
4. Sew the straps to the side panels of the bag. Place the side panels on your work surface, with the seams away from you. Pin the straps 2" from each side of your bag side panels. Make sure that your straps aren't twisted in any way. Sew the straps to the side panels, sewing over the existing seams.
5. Prepare the bottom of your bag. To your 10" x 8.5" square of accent fabric, with the right side of the fabric facing down, fold each of the long edges in 1/2" and press.
6. Sew the bottom of the bag to the side panels. Place one of the side panels on your work surface, with the straps showing, handles away from you. Place the bottom piece, Right side down, on top of the side panel, long edges together. Line up the bottom edges, pin and sew along the pressed line (that you pressed in the last step). Unfold and press the seam. Repeat this step to secure the bottom to the remaining side panel.
7. Cover the seams with bias tape (optional). This step is optional, but I think it just looks nice to not have any raw edges inside your bag. Cut (2) 10" lengths of bias tape to fit along the seams that connect the bottom to the side panels. Open the tape as shown below, fit it along the edge, pin and sew.
7a. Stop here if you need a mini firewood holder for your toddler to use!
8. Sew the sides of the bag. Fold the bag in half, with the straps on the inside. Cut (2) 7.5" pieces of bias tape and fit them along the edges of your patterned fabric. Pin and sew down the entire length of the bag, including the bottom piece, using a 1/4" seam.
9. Create the flat bottom. Trim the corners and turn the bag right side out. Put the bag on your arm, as shown below and take the corner up to where your patterned fabric meets your solid accent fabric. Use a plain, old-fashioned needle and thread to sew the corner in place, and then sew your button on.
