How to Sew a Zipper Pouch Tutorial

 WHAT YOU NEED:

1 fat quarter - outer fabric
1 fat quarter  - lining fabric
1/4 yard cotton quilt batting
9” zipper
matching thread

WHAT YOU DO:
 
1.  Cut two of outer and lining fabrics: 9” x 7”.

2.  Cut two of cotton quilt batting:  9” x 7”.  

3.  To make a square bottomed pouch, cut a 1” square from the bottom corners of all fabric and batting pieces.

4.  The length of your zipper should be 1” less than the width of your fabric (8” in this case).  To cover ends of zipper, cut two pieces of fabric the width of your zipper by 2”.  Fold in half and press.
Press ends to center.  Place fabric tab on zipper ends.   Pin and topstitch down.

5.  Layer pieces in this order:  batting, outer fabric right side up, zipper right side down facing outer fabric, lining, right side down.  Make sure you center the zipper on top of outer fabric, leaving 1/2”
on either side.  Stitch along edge, using zipper foot.  Repeat for other side.

6.  Place right sides of outer fabric and lining together.  Unzip zipper so that you will be able to turn your pouch when finished.

7.  Beginning about 1” from bottom side of lining, stitch around pouch, leaving corners open and leaving about a 4” opening in the bottom of lining.  

8.  Pinch together the open squares, lining up the seams and stitch to form your boxed corners.

9.  Reach through the opening in the lining and pull the outer bag through the opening.

10.  Stitch opening in lining and place lining inside of bag.  Press and you are done!

You can see by placing fabric tabs on the ends of the zipper what neat corners you now have!
